Connecting to a Printer over the Plaster Networks Powerline Network

Introduction

Plaster Networks powerline networking makes it easy to connect your computer to a remote network printer located anywhere in your home or office. (Note: The network printer must have a built-in Ethernet port for attaching directly to the PLN3 adapter.)

Plaster Networks eliminates the need to string Ethernet cable along the walls and under the carpet, or to pull Ethernet cable under the house and through the wall. With Plaster Network PLN3 powerline Ethernet adapters, every electrical outlet can become a connection to your home or office network.

Instructions

Using Plaster Networks PLN3 powerline Ethernet adapters, you can locate a network printer anywhere there is an ac power outlet. Please follow the steps below to set up the powerline network for your printer:

  1. To start, plug a Plaster Network PLN3 adapter into the wall outlet near your printer. Connect the Plaster Network power line adapter to your printer using the Ethernet cable provided with the PLN3 (or any standard Ethernet cable).
  2. Next, plug a second Plaster Network PLN3 adapter into the wall outlet near your router. Connect the Plaster Network powerline adapter to one of the LAN ports of the router using the Ethernet cable provided with the PLN3 (or any standard Ethernet cable).
Now you're ready to print! The printer is accessible from any PC or other device connected to your home network through the router.
  3. You may install additional PLN3 adapters connected to computers throughout your home or office to access the printer over the powerline network. Simply plug the PLN3 unit into a nearby outlet, and the connect the computer to the adapter using the Ethernet cable provided with the PLN3.
  4. Following the instructions below, go to service.plasternetworks.com (or to the PLN Administration Console) to verify your network connection to the printer.

NOTE: A reasonable PHY throughput for connecting to the printer is 15Mbps. A higher throughput level may be helpful for larger file sizes (such as photos or similar images).

a) Plaster Networks Service (service.plasternetworks.com)
Using your browser, go to service.plasternetworks.com and log in (creating an account if you haven’t already done so). Select your network from the main page to view the throughput across the powerline. In the example below, we have named the adapters for convenience using the Network Configuration link in the service's Network Tools menu. (For more information, please see the Plaster Networks Service Tutorial at support.plasternetworks.com.)

for printing even the largest documents.

b) PLN3 Administration Console
Using your browser, go to “plnXXXXXX.local” where XXXXXX is the Plaster Networks ID printed on the sides and top of the PLN3 adapter plugged into your router. From the main menu of the Administration Console, select the “View Network Performance” option to view the network throughput to the printer. (In this case, the PLN3 unit attached to the printer has been assigned the name “Printer”).
