Using Plaster Networks Powerline Networking with Digital Media Adapters

The Plaster Networks powerline networking solution provides a quick, convenient way to connect a digital media adapter to your home network for playing digital mediafiles on your television (including photos, audio, and video).

The powerline network provides a reliable, high performance connection between the DMA and a media server or other storage device in your home. Plaster Networks provides an alternative to using a WiFi connection that may be subject to jitter or other interference.

What is a digital media adapter?

A digital media adapter (DMA) is a network device that allows you to access digital media content through your television. The content can include photos, audio (such as MP3 files), and video (both standard-definition and high-definition).

The media adapter commonly attaches to your television through an HDMI or component video connection. The adapter also includes an Ethernet port for connecting to the home network.

Over the network, the DMA accesses media files from a separate server or storage device. In many cases, the DMA can also access content from over the Internet through popular sites such as Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube.

Example Configuration

Modem/router (Netgear 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Firewall Router, Model DG834G)
Digital media adapter (Popcorn Hour A110 Networked Media Tank)
Network attached storage (Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive)
Powerline Ethernet adapters (Plaster Networks PLN3 Powerline/AV200 Ethernet Adapters)

Installation Instructions
  1. Connect DMA to TV with HDMI or component cables
  2. Connect DMA to PLN3 or AV200 adapter with Ethernet cable

  3. Connect network attached storage to router with Ethernet cable.

  4. Connect router to PLN3 adapter with Ethernet cable.
  5. For Internet access, verify that your router is connected to your service provider (DSL, cable, or other).
  6. Go to service.plasternetworks.com, or PLN Local Admin Console to verify the speed your network connection to the DMA unit. NOTE: The typical PHY throughput required for streaming video across the powerline is 14Mbps for standard definition and 24Mbps for high definition.
a)  Plaster Networks Service (service.plasternetworks.com)
Using your browser, go to service.plasternetworks.com and log in (creating an
account if you haven’t already done so). Select your network from the main page
to view the throughput across the powerline. In the example below, we have
named the adapters for convenience using the Network Configuration link in the
    Network Tools menu.

b) PLN3 Administration Console
Using your browser, go to “plnXXXXXX.local” where XXXXXX is the Plaster Networks ID
printed on the sides and top of the PLN3 adapter (preferably the adapter plugged into
    your router)
