Using Third-Party Adapters with Plaster Networks PLN3 Adapters

Introduction

Plaster Networks PLN3 adapters can be used with many third party powerline Ethernet adapters. However, the adapters must be HomePlug AV compatible. Examples of third-party HomePlug AV adapters include NetGear XAV101, Linksys PLE300 and Belkin Powerline AV. PLN3 units cannot communicate with powerline adapters that use HomePlug 1.0, HomePlug Turbo, DS2/UPA and Panasonic/HD-PLC.

In order for HomePlug AV adapters to communicate with one another in a single network, they must all share the same network password. By default, most HomePlug AV adapters, including Plaster Networks PLN3 units, ship with the default network password of “HomePlugAV”. (NOTE: If you should wish to return a PLN3 adapter to its factory default settings, including resetting the network password, simply insert the end of a paper clip into the hole labeled “RST” located on the front of the unit and hold for approximately three seconds.)

For security reasons, users may commonly change the default network password when configuring a powerline network. As a result, adding a new adapter will require changing the adapter's network password from the default value to match that of the existing network.

When adding a new adapter to a Plaster Networks powerline Ethernet network, please follow the steps below to ensure that the new adapter shares the same password as the other adapters that you have installed.

Instructions

Adding a new adapter to a Plaster Networks powerline Ethernet network involves two simple steps: (a) plug the adapter into a conveniently located outlet, and (b) set the network password of the adapter to match the password of your existing network. Plaster Networks provides two ways to set the network password of a powerline Ethernet adapter: either through Plaster Networks Service, or through the PLN3 Administration Console.

In order to add a third party adapter to a PLN3 network through Plaster Networks Service, you will need to know the adapter’s MAC address and Device Password, most often located on the back of the unit. If adding an adapter through the PLN3 Administration Console, you will also need on hand your network password.

(Important Note: In a mixed network consisting of PLN3 and non-PLN3 adapters that access Plaster Networks Service, the Internet connection should be through a PLN3 unit.)

Resetting the Network Password Through
Plaster Networks Service

To add a third party adapter through Plaster Networks Service, go to service.plasternetworks.com, log in, select your network and choose “Add New Adapter” from the Network Tools list on the right side of the page as illustrated below in figure 2.

In the Third Party Adapters section of the Add Adapter to Network page, enter the adapter’s MAC address and Device Password (located on the back of the unit) and click submit.

You should then see a message indicating that the adapter has been successfully registered to your network. The service sends a command to reset the new adapter's password. The process may take a few minutes before the adapter shows up on the Network Status and Network Configuration pages of the service.

Resetting the Network Password Through the
PLN3 Administration Console

To add a third party adapter to your PLN3 network from the PLN3 Administration Console, enter http://plnXXXXXX.local into your web browser, where XXXXXX is the 6 digit PLNID of a PLN3 adapter already in your network. (The PLNID is located on the back and sides of the unit.)  Once you have accessed the console, select “Change the network password of a different adapter” from the list of options.

Next, use the pull-down list under "Unit" to select the adapter you would like to add to your network. The console will typically list a third party adapter using the adapter's 12 digit MAC address. Next, enter the New Password for the adapter, making certain that the password matches your network’s existing password. (Note: If you do not know your network's existing password, then we recommend using Plaster Networks Service which will automatically assign the matching password.) Then, enter the adapter’s device password and click OK. The console will respond with a message indicating the password change was successful.

Verifying That the Adapter Has Joined the Network

Once the network password of an adapter has been changed successfully, the device’s PL/Powerline LED located on the front of the unit should illuminate steady.

If the LED is not illuminated or is flashing then the adapter will not be able to communicate with the other units in the network. In this case you will need to repeat the process and make certain that the MAC address, device password and network password are entered correctly.
